» Chasing that internet dream
It's funny how old habits die hard.

Lately my sleep schedule and intraweb surfing habits have reverted back to levels unseen since college. Wake up at 10, go to sleep at 3-4am, work 10 hours a day (yea, figure that one out!)

I've found myself back on LJ a bit more these days, but also back on facebook. A weird side-effect of getting more involved in the local and not-so-local videogame music scene is that I find myself more and more on (GASP) MySpace. That's right, I'm on freaking myspace. Which is weird because I loathe myspace with a passion. Ah whatever, anyway if you're up there friend me or something so I look like less of a n00b and a loser, and more like not only am I too lazy to update the profile and html, but I even got someone else to steal someone else's for me. I'm up here: http://www.myspace.com/binary1230

This all makes me really wish however that all the newfangled web 2.0 stuff was in place so I wouldn't have to sign in and update 3 different major profiles just because certain people happen to be on this site and certain people happen to be on others. I want to collab it man, I want it all in one spot. One day...

I have more news for a different post too. Stay tuned dear readers, stay tuned. Like that's possible.
» RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE
DOM IS BACK. Or stuff.

For having retired from LJ and Facebook and Myspace after college, I've been on those 3 a lot lately.

My latest saga's at an end, that is MAGFEST 2008, the east coast's most bad-ass 4-day videogame and videogame music party in January. Just picture around 1000 videogame geeks and musicians in the same hotel for 4 days combined with 2 nights of concerts with bands playing videogame covers, and my newest favorite thing...

That would be: Jamspace, a separate area at magfest this year which myself and a few others got off the ground. In essence we throw a bunch of instruments, a stage, and some lights into a room and watch what happens. There are tons of youtube videos of jamspace already up, and more to come. In addition, check out some jamspace recordings we made over there, more coming everyday.

Jamspace was a total blast this year, though setting up/breaking down and staffing it 20 hours a day landed me an upper respiratory infection and a week's worth of downtime just when things are really heating up at work. Despite this, I'll be doing it again next year. You should go to magfest.

In other VIDEOGAME MUSIC RELATED NEWS:
Friday Feb 1st, Entertainment System and Powerglove are both playing at the Black Hole in Dundalk. Be there.

Also on the horizon don't forget that 32 bit genocide is coming to a local Patterson Theater or thereabouts near you sometime over the summer. 16bit gen, put on by Chris and JD from local videogame band Entertainment System, was another event to add to the badass-videogame-music-related list.

I'll update this in at most 6 months again. PEACE.

» Even more music
I find that the more I keep playing with the sequencer, the better my stuff is starting to sound. For instance, the newer drum tracks I recorded over the weekend aren't as horrendous as they were before. I have a few new songs up here now:

http://baltimorebarcams.com/eb/music/nkb/ - tracks 12 through 16 are new and sound pretty good. Maybe the best two tracks of the bunch, actually listenable now, are Mario Bros Theme (Tropical Mix), Storm Eagle (turned out pretty nice), and there are also some piano solos of FF6 Airship Theme (searching for friends), Yoshi's Island, and Kirby's Dreamland.

Let me know what you think.
» New Music
So a while ago before my car went toast the previous week, I picked up a new Yamaha MO8 keyboard (WHICH ROCKS).

I haven't even begun to dig into it too much yet - there is so much to learn on it - but I have recorded some tracks which you can check out over here: http://baltimorebarcams.com/eb/music/nkb/

The best track there is this one, which I recorded using the built-in sequencer. It's a remix of the main theme from Chrono Trigger - http://baltimorebarcams.com/eb/music/nkb/nkb09 - chrono trigger - brink of time - test mix.mp3

I suck at drums, but I'm fairly happy with it.
» Dom was deported
No, I'm kidding, don't worry.

In case you were wondering what happened to me, I'm still here fine, alive, and well.

I just wanted to post something that an absurdly large amount of people have been asking about.

Einstein's breakfast is down, sort of, ever since Loyola CS changed around the host I had it on. Still, the files are all there. Even better is that I have a full mirror at this site:

http://baltimorebarcams.com/eb/index.shtml

So if you want to get to my stuff, use that URL for now. Still, einsteinsbreakfast needs a HUGE update and removal of stuff from, say, high school.

So for those of you who requested this is my :ICMP ECHO REPLY: back to you and all that.

Take it easy

» New pirates vs ninjas!
Greetings all, I finally got around to cleaning up the latest release of Pirates VS Ninjas and doing a windows build:

BEHOLD: Version0.3.1-test1.

This version features LUA scripting and a new effects system. It's finally starting to get into a bit of shape where we can actually _do something_ with the engine.

If you're interested in hacking on it, check out data/scripts/level1.lua in a text editor, it's neat : )

» Pirates vs Ninjas
OK time to post about that often unmentioned game of mine: PIRATES VS NINJAS

I made some more progress today and actually managed to get LUA working inside the game! Lua is a scripting language. Essentially, this allows me to make changes to certain gameplay related elements of the code without having to recompile, which both speeds things up and makes things more organized.

With the map editor coming along as well, this will make the things really flexible.

You can check out this lua code for level one: Level 1 LUA script. The Level_OnLoad gets called by my C++ code on the level start, and that lua script will actually cause that textbox to be displayed in the game! It's neat.

Also, for the curious, einsteinsbreakfast.com is down due to a number of factors. If you're really desperate, I've got a mirror here: http://baltimorebarcams.com/eb/. I am going to bring this back from the dead sometime, but I do have to mess with transferring the domain and stuff, it'll be a pain. Soon enough though.

Subject: Can't wait for the next version of iTunes!

I've been using iTunes and I have to say I really like the idea of an online music store! Brilliant! But your tech guys seem to have gotten confused when implementing the MP3 downloading system. The only way I could get to my MP3's is to burn a CD, rip it, and then encode the MP3 files myself. I'd really like to see the tech guys make this a bit easier in the next version!

As an incentive, let's make a deal: When I can download high quality, unencrypted, plain MP3 files from you at a reasonable price (say $0.10 - $0.99), I will buy $100 of my favorite music.

I'm sure some of my friends would be willing to do the same (right?)

Sincerely Yours,
-Dom

P.S. I learned in my high school business class that suing your customers isn't a good idea. Apple, perhaps you should offer to send the RIAA's lawyers back to their high schools so they finally get this concept.
» Sonic redeemed? Is it true!?!?
I present: Sonic and the Secret Rings.

I must've missed the memo as this game is coming out for the Wii in Spring 07. e.g. Soon. The movie looks ridiculous:

» Pirates VS Ninjas Screens + Starting a Band part 2
I've been working on Pirates Vs Ninjas for a while now and finally have some new screenshots for you. I added a ton of new things such as bombs, explosions, camera shaking, and am gearing up for work on the in-game map editor, which is just a skeleton for now. I will have the new windows version up once I fix my cross-compile environment (thanks Ubuntu upgrade.) Click the picture for a slideshow with the latest screens.

In other news, I am starting up a videogame music rock/blues band (yes, the music kind.) Details are still a bit sketchy at this point, but 3 of us (2 keyboards, 1 guitar) got together and practiced the other day and we sound very good for only having practiced together once. Things are shaping up to look like we are probably going to play at a local gig called Monster Party in October where some other (really good) video game music bands will be playing (I believe Powerglove and Entertainment System, for starters).

Looks like I'll need a new keyboard after all.
» Phantom Cell Phone Rings
Have you ever sat back and all the sudden you hear your cell phone either ring or vibrate? You rush to pull it out and check it only to find that...

It wasn't ringing after all.

I recently heard someone sport the phrase "phantom ring" and decided to see what I could find..
Here's an interesting article about in the NY Times: I Hear Ringing and There's No One There. I Wonder Why.

» Dom breaks the ice again
Hello! Sure is cold in here after 3 months or so of not posting. Brr.. Anyway, down to business.

So let's do a bit of commentary on the Iraq war, though you might be surprised at what I have to say.

This week Bush has called for the addition of about 22,000 new troops to help get the situation under control. He's facing one hell of a firestorm from the new Democrats and even some of the regular Republicans as well.

However, on this occasion I do have to agree with him. I believe that we should have never gone to Iraq in the first place, but now that country is our responsibility. As a result of our actions, Iraq is now a battleground verging on all-out civil war. It is now our job to clean up the mess we made.

Iraq was still a giant lie, there was no connection to terrorism or WMD's or anything we were force-fed, however, there are still people there that have to live with the destroyed infrastructure and ghastly violence on a daily basis that we have an obligation to.

I think our policy makers can take a lesson from Sun Tzu:
"Invincibility is established because you are proficient at defence; victory is possible because you are adept at attacking. Not having sufficient force to launch an attack, you should settle for defence; when your force is formidable and overwhelming, you should attack. Hence, one who is adept at defence will conceal his force in the deepest recesses underground and the one who is adept at attacking will strike from stratospheric heights with lightning speed. As such he will ensure both his own safety as well as total victory."

Overwhelming force: Either do it or forget it. If we're in a war to win it, that's what we need, but I don't think public opinion would ever allow, say, the addition of 300,000 new troops. There's no such thing as a quick war, perhaps next time around we'll remember this. Even our initial numbers were considered too low by the convoy of existing generals endorsing the war. We skimped on the initial numbers and now we're paying the price as well. Real war is extremely expensive, and futzing around gets us into the stalemate position we're in now.
